"So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans" Topic Proposal #3
I chose this poem because I find this topic to be very interesting and something that may affect my life in the future. I believe in hard work and fare work so I am kind of torn between whether or not it is right to let illegal immigrants work or not. The United States and Mexico have always had problems with illegal aliens, and those illegal aliens taking jobs away from American workers.
I reasearched this topic on illegal aliens coming to the United States and learned about NAFTA and how illigal immigration became very popular in the 1980's. That is significant because in 1986 Public law 99-603 Act of 11/6/86 was passed to help control this. This poem talks about many problems about Americans views on illegal aliens and how they treat them, this poem is not only about stealing Americans jobs but it is about the life style and way that this illegal aliens are viewed in the public eye.

Kevin, this looks much more like a topic proposal. It is clear what motivates you and what cultural perspective you are taking. However, all your claims so far are about the social issue at stake, while they should be about the poem. What is the author's take on this issue? How does it appear in the text? What aspects of the debate does this poem address? What side does it represent?
I like the topic you have chosen. Not only does it have connections with the history between the two countries, but it continues to happen today, and what I believe to be more prevalent. This problem affects citizens of both countries, and I think it really is a matter of what is right and fair.
Man this is a very complex and interesting topic. I think from your topic proposal it looks to me like you can formulate a strong argument about your story. But you need to be a little careful here because you are not only going to focus on the historical context but you also are dealing with reality. Even if the assignment asks you to talk about cultural/historical context, you might wanna consider that this is an ongoing situation between Mexico and USA and as it looks to me I don't think it is going to have any solution any time soon. America does needs those Latin people for real.
I agree with you on your points of this poem. I am torn as well between whats fair and what is not. However you should try to talk more about the poem and less about what is going on in society.
